To be held in Itasca, IL (near Chicago)
June 22, 2019

Purpose:

In this small, process-oriented workshop we will explore how the therapist's own aging, illness, and decreased sense of erotic or sexual interest impact their general attitudes toward life, relationships, expression of sexuality and the psychotherapeutic relationship/process. As we age, do we say Goody-bye to sex, or Hello to mature sexuality?

Objectives:

1.  Assess their own sense of aging and its impact on their sexuality.
2.  Identify at least one way their age, health, or  sexual condition is impacting their work with  clients/patients.
3.  Describe at least one way to manage their  sexual countertransference.

Outline of Workshop:

1. Cultural messages about aging and sexuality (Obj. 1, 45 mins., Tuikka & Eichel)
        a. The pressure to remain young.
        b. Interpreting physical changes.
        c.  “Sex is for beautiful people.”
2. Clients’ experiences with aging and sexuality (Obj. 2, 60 mins. Tuikka & Eichel)
        a. Do we even ask?
        b. What is “normal”?
        c. Transference and counter-transference issues.
3. Therapists’ (our own) experiences with aging and sexuality (Obj. 1 & 2, 75 mins. Tuikka & Eichel)
        a. Do we ever think/talk about it?
       b.  What is “normal”?
